I think we have all been there at some point. That urgent gut-wrenching feeling you get when you know something must be done within a certain time frame, but you just don’t feel it’s possible. But, you know its imminent ! (studying for those exams back at school comes to mind)

Well, it happened to me with this image. The skies had generally been void of any clouds for quite a few days. However, the forecast changed quite suddenly. Showers and perhaps a storm were now expected, albeit further inland.

It was very late in the afternoon when I saw the first clouds rolling in over the hills. I had no idea what I wanted to photograph so I just got in the car and started driving. I saw a dirt track and decided to turn and follow it. Maybe I could find something there. Yeahhhh, Nuh ! No luck.

I was looking for the perfect subject to photograph but time was quickly running out. The clouds were now overhead and the sun was about to set. No time left so I started to look for anything ! My heart was in panic mode and I’d almost given up hope. I turned right into what was a very corrugated, gravel track. Another right-hand turn and with desperation steering me, I saw a group of leafless trees on the side of the track. It’s all I had so I stopped and flung the car door open. As I did, the sun dropped behind the distant hills. There was still time. I grabbed my camera hoping the settings would be appropriate for the shot (and with a little help from you know who) I shot this image. A fluke in anyone’s language.

When the rush had finally passed, I did manage to settle, chill and briefly reflect on the trees. I’m sure they had their own story to tell. Somehow, it felt disrespectful to grab the shot and run. So, I did manage to stay for a while and ponder. It did however feel like I was interrupting a quarrel amongst them. Arms raised and yelling at the one in the middle. Yes, I know. I’m losing it. Time to leave………. relieved and content.
