Eerie
I had just returned from a short hike where I was following a dry riverbed in Parachilna Gorge. I had no intentions of going out for a photo shoot as I was ( to put it bluntly), buggered. As the sun started to drop behind the trees signaling that the end of another glorious day was near, the sky started to look and feel different. I knew I had to get the camera out.
I started to drive away from camp and headed along a dirt track towards the historic town of Blinman looking for a suitable composition. The sun was getting lower and lower and I was now starting to panic as I hadn’t found anything that grabbed my attention.
The familiar orange glow of the sunset was fast disappearing as the sun disappeared behind the ranges. After driving for 30kms and not finding a composition, I had basically given up on finding anything suitable so I turned for home. The light, the colour and just the feel of the bush for a short time felt eerie yet at the same time, beautiful and calming.
I got to within a 100 metres of camp on my return when I rounded a bend on the track and suddenly saw what I felt was a potential image. Was it what I was looking for ? I had no time to even think about it. I grabbed my camera and tripod, walked blindly off the track and into the bushes (praying no snakes were anywhere near me) and took my one and only shot.
I’d driven 60 kms in that short space of time searching for an image and I eventually found what I was looking for just 100 metres from where I started. I’m sure there’s a lesson to be learnt there somewhere.
