Panic in the River

“Windy morning” they said. “Cool” they said “with very few clouds” they said. Well, they were right about the weather being cool and windy but no marks for forecasting a clear sky. Unfortunately, it was totally overcast. Not ideal for a photo shoot but I did like the area so I thought I’d grab the camera and just see what was out there. After being spoilt for choice in the Flinders Rangers, I wasn’t overly confident about finding anything on the relatively flat country, west of the Ranges.

However, I did pass by a dry river bed (one of my favourite places to explore ) not far along the track I was on. It was an easy choice for me to pull over and start walking. “Snake season” as I call it, was just starting to gather momentum, so I was definitely a little wary as I made my way around the twists and bends of the riverbed.

As sunrise approached, I could see that the clouds were starting to break up. My heart started to beat just a little faster as I felt that there was now a slim chance that I may just be able to grab myself a sunrise shot. My pace quickened and in my mind, the thought of being confronted by a snake was no longer an issue – just get the shot !

The sun just started to poke its head above the horizon and I still hadn’t found a composition. I won’t call it panic but…… ok, panic started to set in. Finally, as I walked around yet another bend, I found a potential composition. I had no choice. This had to be it. I started to laugh at myself at just how clumsy I was in trying to set up when all I needed to do was just stay calm.

There was a very small break in the clouds which miraculously allowed the sun’s rays to somehow find their way through. I took the shot but I forgot to take the len’s cap off !

Nuhhhh, only kidding, but I did feel a sense of relief though because very shortly after, the clouds closed in and the sun disappeared for the remainder of the day.

It was time to break out my thermos for a morning coffee and that log looked just the place to enjoy it – snakes or no snakes !
