Balance

It was such a beautiful walk through the thick scrub within The Oak Forest, in Central Victoria. Tough, steep, but beautiful. I had been told about this balancing rock by a few of the locals. One of which was “Rugged Ray from the Pilbarra” which is what he liked to be called. What a character !

Anyway, my first attempt at finding it saw me on a 5 km bush bash, well away from the exact location. It wasn’t until another local was able to lead me to where it was located.

At times, the hike up the hill seemed quite dreamlike. This weird feeling I had was made even more weird when I looked up to see (through some quite fantasy like trees), the elusive “balancing boulder”. To me, it felt as if it was waiting to greet me. Sitting well balanced on its throne with its loyal “soldiers” surrounding it as if ready to protect their master.

It turns out that they are not two separate boulders. In fact, they are one large boulder that has been eroded by the elements. Regardless, being up there at sunset on what was a beautiful day and then looking across the valley made me realise just how fortunate I am to be able to do what I’m doing.
