Melancholy Feelings

The name Innamincka comes from the First Nation people, Yandruwandha words ‘Yini’ and ‘mingka’ meaning ‘your waterhole’. Not knowing the history of this area, it was at this waterhole, better known as Cooper Creek, that I set up camp for a few nights.

In 1845, explorer Charles Sturt was the first white man to pass through here. However, this area’s most famous link with Australian pioneering history is with the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition in the early 1860’s. Both Burke and Wills perished nearby.

For me, it was a warm and balmy evening as the sun started to set over Cooper Creek. I had spent the last couple of days tracing their final steps and visiting their eventual resting place of what was an historic, albeit unsuccessful expedition.

I recall sitting back in my chair immersed in these melancholy feelings trying to understand what it may have been like for them as they struggled to stay alive to the point where they weren’t able to continue. Looking at this picturesque scene before me, I found it impossible to do so.
