Fire in the Sky

I was on the south coast of NSW when those horrible fires took a hold of the whole area. 33 lives were lost and over 2400 hundred homes were destroyed. To say the whole experience was absolutely terrifying for so many people would be an understatement.

The fires were racing through the countryside on numerous fronts and at times it almost felt that fighting them was a lost cause. On one particular morning, thinking that the fires were nowhere near where I wanted to go, i woke very early and drove the one hour to Tuross Heads.

I got out of my car just as the sun was scheduled to rise over the horizon. What I was witnessing was unexpected, beautiful and yet sinister at the same time. As I looked across the channel at the inlet, the sky started to turn an eerie red. This was due to a combination of smoke from the approaching bushfire and the expected sunrise. You could sense the uneasiness from the passing walkers as they stopped to try to comprehend the scene.

At that moment, a young bloke pulled up beside me on his bicycle and asked me if I was aware that the fire was heading our way and fast. That if I wasn’t aware of it, I had better get a move on.

I took the shot, packed up my gear and drove back as quick as I could not knowing what lay ahead of me.
