Uneasy
Recently, I was fortunate enough to have taken part in the annual “Flying Doctor Service Outback Trek” charity run which took us from Mount Isa, through to the Gulf country, Kakadu and finishing off in Darwin. The trek took us through some amazing and unique landscapes. This particular image was taken in the Northern Territory near the Gulf near a place called Lorella Springs.
Our car arrived in the afternoon so I had enough time to grab my camera and go for a walk and explore a nearby river. I broke off from the main river itself and followed a small tributary. It was like walking into a different world. I had only experienced this eerie feeling once before.
As I continued to explore, I noticed the chirping of the birds had ceased, the tree canopy started to block the majority of the sunlight and the stringybark trees seemed to be crowding in on me. Even the character of the river changed from what was a vibrant, free flowing water system to a somewhat murky, algae covered pond.
As beautiful as it was, I did start to feel a little uncomfortable. My mind started to play games with me. After all, we were in crocodile country and I wasn’t sure what lay hidden in the water.
I saw a composition that I really liked so I set up my camera close to the waters edge where two smaller tributaries met. I had one eye nervously focused on the scene before me, one finger on the camera’s shot button and I have to say, everything else focused on the water around me.
I took the shot, grabbed my gear and with one last look over my shoulder, got out of there as quickly as I could.
