Old Friend
The Australian outback is a very special place for me. I have often referred to it as my “church” or even my “medicine”. Many years ago, I’d often find myself in stressful situations regardless of whether it was work related or anything else that life would throw at me. I think some of you reading this may also have felt that feeling at some point.
It wasn’t until I returned home after my first trip to the outback in the late 90’s that I felt different. It’s hard to describe, but I felt less stressed, less bothered with the small stuff and even less phased by nasty people. I did feel different. I felt I was in a better headspace and able to deal with situations more calmly.
It was mid afternoon when I found myself doing a little “bush bashing” near a town called Tablelands in the Northern Territory. The sun was out, very few clouds about and although I wasn’t able to find a composition that I liked, it was of no concern to me. After all, I was in my happy place and if I were to capture an image, then it would be a bonus.
Later that afternoon, the clouds started to roll in from the east as the sun started to search for the horizon. It was time to head back to the van. My initial thoughts were that a storm was brewing but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The sky suddenly stated to illuminate into a magnificent array of soft yellows, pinks, magentas, purples and yellows – such a mixing pot. On cue, the landscape around me started to take on this beautiful, soft, reflected light
Suddenly, the smallest of features became focal points for any composition that I chose. In this image for example, the twisted and gnarly branches of this fallen tree against a backdrop of fire damaged trees and shrubs caught my attention. This image and all that happened in the last couple of hours of that day brought an extra smile to my face. The outback is more than just a landscape. One can sense that it is so much more which is why I have continued to visit what has become my “old friend”.
