Man Running from Storm
Many years ago, I recalled driving through the East MacDonell Ranges and coming across a place called Corroboree Rock. I remember it well because it was a solo trip in a small hired campervan and I had arrived there quite late one afternoon. I recall my first task was to look for firewood. I had ventured no more than about 40 metres from my van and felt I almost had enough wood for my campfire for the night. I started to turn back when I heard a very loud, cracking sound.
I had no idea what it was and it sounded like it came from behind some bushes up ahead. I had to find out what it was if I was going to have a restful sleep that night. The bushes were quite thick so I had to get on my hands and knees in order to get to the other side. It was definitely a struggle and while still on my hands and knees, I managed to poke my head through the other side of the bushes just enough to look around. I looked to the left first and then slowly panned to the right. As I did, there was a massive bull (yes, with massive horns ) not 3.00 mtres away looking right at me. It’s as if he knew I was coming.
I stared at him for a few moments to see what he was going to do. He, of course, was staring right back at me. Well, to say I was just a little, let’s use the word concerned, would be an understatement. I slowly crept backwards out of the bushes and after untangling myself from all the twigs and branches, and brushing off a spider, I bolted back to the safety of the van. My thoughts of relaxing around an open fire with a glass of red soon diminished quickly and I decided to get out of there. So yes, the thought of visiting this place again brought back all these memories. I must say, I did have a bit of a laugh about it all so I was looking forward to seeing it again.
On this trip, I was intent on seeing Corroboree Rock. However, despite my good intentions, it wasn’t to be. I was surprised to see some nasty looking storm clouds forming rather quickly to the south. Although I was just short of reaching the Rock, I decided to stop and not proceed. The storm looked like one that I didn’t care to get caught up in. However, the sky looked amazing so I got out of the car and decided to walk into the scrub to see if I could find a composition.
I had ventured a fair way from the car and decided enough was enough so I started to head back. On turning around, I was immediately drawn to this amazing burnt out tree. It looked like a man running - a man running from the storm ! The storm was getting closer by the minute and the lightning and thunder was a reminder that I needed to get out of there. However, I had to take the image !
It was the second time I have visited this place (well, almost) and it’s the second time I had to leave it in a hurry ! Corroborree Rock – maybe someone is trying to tell me something ! I’ll be back ……
