Last Light

It was a really hot, late afternoon in outback Queensland when I turned down an old, unused, dirt track looking for a composition. The clouds started to fill the sky as the sun was setting and all I could see around me was a dry brown and desolate landscape. Was I going to be able to find anything here ?

Driving a little further, I came across this group of trees that on the one hand looked to be struggling in the dry climate with their lack of leaves, but yet, their delicate branch structure seemed to be strong enough to thrive here as well.

I quickly jumped out of the car and the heat immediately hit me. This was quickly followed by those damn relentless and annoying flies. It didn’t deter me. I started to set up and across the other side of the track were a small herd of inquisitive kangaroos. You could almost hear them asking each other, “Oi, what’s this bloke up too then, aye “?

I had a few minutes to set up and find the composition that would work. A few final adjustments and then “click”. The colours I saw that afternoon were breathtaking and to me, I felt like I was in the real outback. Dry and isolated it may be, almost a moonscape, but yet, oh so beautiful, peaceful and quiet. I love the bush !
