Back in Time

The cave I was looking for is located at Cave Hill near the old Western Australian gold mining town of Coolgardie. It’s a reasonable walk over and across a huge basalt outcrop to get to the cave but the walk was exceptional. I found myself surrounded by these amazing Salmon Gums. They’re so distinctive with their smooth, salmon coloured trunks which glowed in the late afternoon sun. I wish I had more time to experience them but I needed to get to the cave.

As I entered the cave, I saw a large boulder on the ground with worn out grooves where the first inhabitants use to grind their seeds for food. There were also ancient paintings high up on the walls and all this, caught me by surprise. It suddenly occurred to me that at some point in the distant past, this was a home. People lived here !

As I walked around the cave with this new found respect, it was so easy to imagine those early inhabitants sitting around or simply going about their normal chores. It was a wonderful feeling and again, I wish I had more time to experience it all.

The light was escaping me and I really wanted to capture an image that would remind me of this incredibly prehistoric experience I have had.
